The Toronto Ski, Snowboard & Travel Show (T.O. Snow Show for short) kicked off yesterday with local gear afficianados angling for the best selection of the weekend, but the highlight of the day was to come at night: the Toronto premiere of The Art Of Flight. Hitting sold out status earlier in the week (or possibly sooner), Red Bull and Quiksilver's opus really was the hottest ticket in town. Unlike most snowboard movie premieres, the typical wait-until-the-last-minute, something-will-come-up approach would have you left out in the cold (actually, mild October evening).
The lines built up outside, with "I haven't watched it yet, I've been holding out" being a common conversation overheard in the buzzing crowd. Inside, the lobby hosted photos and artwork from the Asymbol gallery, a preview of the new SSX videogame franchise reboot, and Red Bull, of course.
Inside the theatre, all bets were off with no assigned seats. When the lights dropped, it was Red Bull's (and Push.ca's) Pete Andersen taking the stage, sharply dressed, relinquishing his role from the world premiere in New York a few months ago.

Pete Andersen, setting the mood.
If you were lucky enough to find Pete's business card under your seat, you walked away with either a copy of the limited edition Art Of Flight book or a Travis Rice board. If you found yourself with one of his cards by other means, you should probably give him a call anyway.

Pete giving away the goods.
Entering to a round of rawkus applause, Travis Rice and Bjorn Leines hit the stage to finish up the introductions. Keeping it local, Travis mentioned that his Red Bull teammate and Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf was in the house (it met with mixed response).

Bjorn and Travis, preaching to the choir.

It may look that way, but they are NOT doing a duet.
And the movie itself? You need to see it to believe it. And see it big – sound and screen – if you've got the chance. The Toronto crowd was really vocal for the opening segment before quieting down when the movie takes a travel documentary turn to South America (with exception of the drunk peanut gallery in the back – they were vocal for the whole thing). Cheers and applause were raised again for Mark McMorris' lone shot in the movie (c'mon, guess what it is), and everyone left wide-eyed and in awe when it was all over.
Shuttle buses ushered people off to the Red Bull 3Style DJ competition at the Guvernment for those wishing to start/keep the party going, and that was the evening. Don't feel bad if you've bought the movie from iTunes already; it only gets better on the big screen.
And if you're looking for some one-on-one time with Mr. T. Rice himself, we've got that for you too. Before the show, Matt Houghton stole a few moments of his time, so we'll have that for you on Monday in easy-to-digest video form. Travis talked about all the questions he's heard too much of (including "what's next?"), how much he loves the BC interior, how important it was to the second year of filming, working with Eagle Pass Heli and Scott Newsome, and more. He also answers "what's next?" (hint: he's got an event cooked up for Canada this coming winter). Don't miss out.

Matt Houghton puts Travis under the spotlights.
Here's the trailer. If you haven't seen it yet, shame on you. 1.1 million-plus views can't be wrong.
