Thursday July 1st was not only
Canada's b-day, but it was the grand opening of the Horseshoe Adventure Park. Like
the gooey centre of some sweet treat, the heart of the park is the Horseshoe
Skate park. 10,000 square feet of fresh asphalt and features were laying in
wait for what seemed like more than 100 skaters. Once everybody was warmed up,
chilled out and broken in, a Best Trick contest was kicked off. With $500 cash
money up for grabs and four obstacles chosen to be destroyed, it was on like Donkey
Kong.

Todd Hohberger
It started out with a session on the new 4'
mini. Some dudes were killing it! In the end park builder and local pro Todd
Hohberger laid down a sick line that included bomb dropping of the guardrail
and smooth skating all around that made him $100 richer. Evan Jewitt proved
that age is of no concern when he showed some man sized skills and took home
$60 for good measure.

Next came the centre planter feature: a 16'x16'
planter with 4 different width ledges and manny pads, great for combinations
and mid grind collisions. Skaters were getting tech as hell with Brandon "you
can't spell my last name" laying down some nosegrinds on the coping, manuals on
the pad and a greasy kickflip 50-50 to earn his $100. After the planter session
it was on to the hubbas. Ryan Ellis took this one with ease. Ryan had five
bangers to everyone elses one, gapping across the hubba to flat, fakie ollie on
the 9-stair and a bunch more. Kyle Cheese jumped in with a smooth front one,
fakie 5-0, half cab out to earn some cash as well.

To cap it all off, a dirty jersey barrier
session was chosen to finish out the day. Todd was back with a vengeance but
his board wouldn't stay under his feet. Hurricanes and some sick boneless' were
attempted but again Ryan Ellis stepped up and showed his skill. $200 richer, it's safe to say Ryan had a good day.

Evan Jewitt taking the cash.
When it was all
over, high fives and shit eating grins were the order of the day. Tons of
stoked out parents, groms and old dudes (myself included) had a great time at
the new Horseshoe skate park. Thanks to Horseshoe, Todd and Ed Hohberger,
Oakley and all the skaters and spectators for coming out. See you at the next
Horseshoe skate jam!
