BLVD's GNAR-BQ
Posted On Jun 29 2009, 02:49 PM by smcdonald

Kevin Kelly knows how to have a good time and most importantly likes to share it with others. Since the fears of the “Communist Threat” are long since over, sharing of this type can be done publicly and benefits everybody, or at least every one who shows up at one of his Gnar-BQ’s at Quilchena skatepark.

Kevin Kelly takes time away from the grill to get ill.

Since I enjoy a leisurely evening at the skatepark and being a tramp (I was recently corrected on my continued use of hobo and it turns out I was wrong, a hobo is someone without a job or a home. It seems I fit in with the former) I decided to kill two birds with one stone, evening skateboarding and free food.

Smells like summertime.

After finishing up at the office, the office being either the Blenz at the corner of Nelson and Granville, or at the Loose Moose pub across the street, I made my way up to Quilchena where Paul Machnau and OG Red Dragon and Vancouver street legend Ben Nichol were already mid session along with some of the locals.

Lucky winner of Birnie's impromptu "I probably have some shoes in trunk" contest.

Shortly after, Birnie showed up, along with Kevin McCoubrey and Nate Jones from Supra and within moments of their arrival, came Kevin Kelly and the BBQ. It wasn’t long before the rich aroma of fine meat products being licked by flames hit my nostrils and everyone sat down to eat communally. Again, the “Communist Threat” is over so this is totally fine.

First person perspective of a hotdog about to be eaten.

Stuffed with hotdogs and alcohol free drinks—the event is for kids after all—a rousing flatland session broke out on the upper deck, which then turned into a dork trick session which is my favorite type of flatland. A word to the wise, don’t mess with McCoubrey when it comes to dork tricks, his bag runs deep.

Him and I even went head to head on Kevin Kelly’s Salba bevel-cave to see if we could three flip on that monster. I thought my days were numbered but managed to stick it on my final chance. I know understand why flip tricks didn’t exist in the pool skating days.

Kevin and the beast.

Kevin, making the beast his bitch.

If you want to hit up BLVD’s next Gnar-BQ keep your eyes peels for details on their site.
