If there's one thing anybody
should do before they die it's meet Robjn Taylor. This long time whistler local and all around good guy is not
only one hell of an athlete, but he's way up there on my personal list of
creative and inspiring people that I've had the pleasure of running into. When
you combine his ability to make a bad situation good with his ability to run
with an idea you end up with something that you're about to read. Earlier on in
the snowboard season, I approached Robjn up on Blackcomb Mountain with a few
questions about which mountain he liked better: Whistler or Blackcomb. That
conversation turned into three phone conversations and eventually ended up on
paper about three months later. What you're about to read is one of the best
comparisons between Whistler and Blackcomb done to date. Let us know if you
agree or disagree with Robjn's scoring.

Powder Days On Whistler
It typically snows much more
on Whistler than it does on Blackcomb. Everyone knows this. Go over to Sun
Bowl! Check it out, it's not boring at all. They have the Symphony chair over
there, which is kind of new and probably has padded seats. Bring a
pocket-sandwich, do some hiking, build a booter, and use your [iPhone] 3GS to
film you and your friends doing back flips off of it. That's the best idea for
deep snow days.
Powder Days on Blackcomb
Fresh Blackcomb powder is
the greatest shit ever, but it's highly volatile. So if you see any of it while
you're riding around, you should probably just leave it alone. Stick to the
groomed runs, or "the piste" as it's called by people who frequently eat more
saffron than you. Speaking of fancy eating, Blackcomb's main restaurant, the Rendezvous,
has fresh fajitas that come with your choice of four different types of salsa.
One of them is green! For real.
Now, to keep things
organized here, let's keep score per category:
Points Awarded:
Whistler 4, Blackcomb 2

Crappy Weather Days on Whistler
Whistler's park is perfect
for flooping around on those days when the light's too flat for getting crazy
or there's 5cm of fresh snow kicking around for good times, but not enough to
go shred the mountain. With an even flow and tons of different jibs you can
continue to learn obscure tricks that no one else in the world can do, and then
name them after whatever you ate for breakfast and/or your favourite animal,
e.g., The Sausage Hawk.
Crappy Weather Days on Blackcomb
Similar to Whistler's park,
is the Blue Park on Blackcomb. It's great in flat light for the same reasons,
but the flow and jib options are a bit stunted, or less stunty, whichever way
you want to look at it. However, you're right alongside the Black Park all day,
so not only do you get to watch senders try to kill themselves in bad
conditions, but if the weather changes suddenly... hot damn! You just hop into
the Black Park and have the best time ever.
Points Awarded:
Whistler 2, Blackcomb 2.

Park Weather Days on Blackcomb
If it's two days after the
last pow day and sunny, then you have yourself some perfect park conditions.
You'll want to take advantage of this for sure. So in the morning, while you're
eating sausages, you should obsessively watch footage (frame by frame if you
have to) from the latest major slopestyle event, and that way you'll know what
tricks are the hottest for you to try that day. Then go do some laps on the
Catskinner chair and enjoy it's rickety slowness! Seriously though, it's the best.
Park Weather Days on Whistler
These are the exact same as
Crappy Weather Days on Whistler, except that it's sunny, and you're missing out
on perfect park conditions on Blackcomb.
Points Awarded:
Whistler 1, Blackcomb 4

Summer on Whistler
Sightseeing and mountain biking
and yawning.
Summer on Blackcomb
Snowboarding at Camp of
Champions. Jumps, rails, friends, t-bar!
Points Awarded: Whistler -3, Blackcomb 685
Okay, so let's do a little
math here...
The Total Score: Whistler 4, Blackcomb 693.
Well, it was close.
Robjn is also a funny guy both in front of and behind the camera. Here's Robjn's Filmmaker Showdown
