Koty Brown Loves Toronto

During the course of a skateboarders "career", they will be forced to make sacrifices in order to reach their goals. For many Canadian skaters, moving from the east coast to the west coast is a decision that they will to have to face on the road to "making it" in the Canadian skate scene. With the exception of Morgan Smith and select Montreal-based skateboarders, not many people have been able to avoid relocating themselves on the road to moving ahead in the skate game. But what if you just want to skate as much as possible without moving? Why would you spend all that hard-earned money on traveling around when you could spend your money in your hometown? After all, you love the city that you're from, right? Toronto's Koty Brown loves skateboarding and loves his city. I recently had the chance to catch up with Koty and spend time talking about the Toronto skate scene and his plans to do his part in keeping the scene alive. Throw on a New Era, grab your Maple Leafs jersey and listen as Koty breaks down why Toronto is the perfect place for him and his crew to skate year-round.

Are you going to get out of Toronto anytime soon, like the rest of the skaters that are doing it big? What's up with Cali in the winter, or do you prefer the underground parking garages and security guards in Toronto?
I would love to get out of Toronto while it's winter and shitty, but considering that I never had a real job until I was 20, I didn't have money to get anywhere. I didn't even get out to MTL until I was in my late teens. I did the "skate rat life" and skated as much a possible at the indoor parks and undergrounds. I'd say I'm almost too old for everyday undergrounds nowadays though. Don't get me wrong, I'd still go here or there, but now I have the luxury of having a skatepark down the road from me. It's not even five minutes away and its called "The Loft". Shout out to Evey (Everett Maclean)! Thanks for saving skaters lives out here since there are no more indoor parks. Respect! This winter, I don't know if I'm going anywhere but there are some ideas floating around about Barce[lona]. I wish. After this winter though, I'm definitely getting out a bit. Going to NYC for sure! I want to go to Cali at least once in my life. Maybe next winter?

I know that you used to travel quite a bit. In fact, you spent some time out west a couple years ago. Where is the one place that you can see yourself moving in the future and why?
To be completely honest I don't wanna move anywhere. I live for Toronto. My fu*kin city! I love everything about this city and would never not have a place here. This place is the best and peeps are about to see this city blow up! If I HAD to choose somewhere it would probably be Barcelona. So many ledges everywhere.

Are you happy with where you're at, or is the world about to get turned on its ass when you start producing banger after banger after banger?
Hell yeah. There are a lot of things that could be worse in life. As for the bangers, I guess we'll see what comes out of the new season.

Are you filming or shooting photos for anything in particular these days?
Nah, I'm not filming for anything right now because it's winter. When it's nice out though, I'm gonna do what I always do: skate. You know, film what I can and shoot what I can, hope for the best to come out of it. I think that we're trying to film a Gold Wheels Canada thing for the summer; just like a minute of footy each or something.

What's the Toronto skate scene like?
The skate scene in Toronto is fu*kin live. So many good skaters in all cities, though. A lot of people have NO idea outside of Canada. There're so many good skaters here that people have never heard off, or just don't get shown love because of some bullshit. Especially in Toronto, I see it everyday. But it's like they say, "it's all who you know", right?
