Warming Up With LNP
Posted On Dec 24 2008, 09:07 PM by bmatt

Every rider approaches each season in his or her own style. But what if, as in the case of Quebec's own Laurent-Nicolas Paquin, you're blown the fuck up and the shred media and industry is eyeing your every move? I was curious to find out.

It's no secret we're fans of LNP's here at Push.ca. (Click here for a previous interview with LNP and the Rome team, and here for a blog posting on LNP.) What's not to like? He's a ship of good character charting a course through a sea of conformity and mediocrity. Plus, he has wicked style and can shred the shit out of a skateboard in the rare moments when he's not snowboarding. (Click here for skate shots from a red-hot session at the SBC Media mini-ramp in Toronto.)

This season will offer a unique departure for LNP: after two straight winters of greasing Quebec rails with his friends and teammates at Rome (like Yan Dofin and Max Legend), he's joined the Holden crew to film a part for the upcoming Videograss release. Read on and find out how LNP's warming up for the heavy winter months ahead, and why he could give a fuck what the haters say.

Since we last spoke in October, the season is definitely on, as they say. What have you been doing so far?
I was at my friend Ben Bilocq's house in Whistler for the month of November, just chilling. I rode the first day of Whistler; me, Ben and Jess Kimura sessioned a little rail we set up on Blackcomb Mountain. Right now I'm heading to Flint, Michigan, with Nick Dirks, Jonas Michilot, Justin Meyer and Louif Paradis to start shooting for Videograss.

Does it take you some time to warm up each season, like a week or two of solid riding, before you'll step to big rails or jumps?
Yeah, for sure... You can't really just go for it without practicing a little and getting used to riding again.

Where will you spend most of your time this winter, do you think?
I'll probably hit a lot of rails, so I guess the USA and Quebec for most of my winter. Maybe go back to Whistler and try to sled a little...

How are plans coming together for the Holden video?
It's called Videograss. Things are really good; we're starting the season right now. The production is 100% on and we have the best riders and humans in this film... It's gonna be awesome, so haters should start hating really soon!

Who is your crew for Videograss? Will it be tough not getting to ride with the Rome guys as much?
I will be riding mostly with Louif Paradis, Ben Bilocq, Nick Dirks and Jonas Michilot. I rode with the Rome guys for two years now... I think change is always good. Filming with different people will just help me have more fun.

Holden is a smaller company, a lot like Rome. Does that kind of rider-run company appeal to you more?
Yes, for sure. I don't like big companies that make you feel like you're a number. I know pretty much everybody at Rome, and Mikey is a friend and Holden is a really down-to-earth company. Ashbury [LNP's eyewear sponsor -ed.] is another company that I like a lot that is different and just does its own thing.

Have you gone riding with Mikey Leblanc yet?
No, I haven't, but I am looking forward to it this year for sure.

You've gotten a lot of recognition in the past two seasons, between your video parts and exposure in the magazines. Are you feeling more pressure now because of that?
No, there is just more haters, that's all. I do what I do; I give everything I can to make snowboarding look fun and beautiful. I'm really skateboard-influenced, so I like to get my tricks as perfect as they would be in skateboarding, which is really hard. I just do what I want as good as I can, that's all.

What about backcountry riding? It seems like riders who are known for rails are expected to start riding in the backcountry. Do you think that's fair?
I never liked the, ''we have to get you to do backcountry so people like you more'' kind of deal. What I do is rails: that's what I have in my head all year. If I ever want to go hit the backcountry, it's gonna be natural stuff since I don't like the, ''let's shovel for six hours and hit the jumps three times tomorrow '' deal. You might see me throw myself off a cliff this year... Who knows?

Do you have any New Year's resolutions this year?
Keep on having fun snowboarding and never listen to haters!
