Street
artist, Creepy has a chimerical style, a whimsical studio and a never-ending
smile. I was able to sit down with the Perth based artist in his studio, where
he gave me a sneak preview of his upcoming show.
Tell me a little bit
about yourself.
I have been doing street art since 05, and before that I was
just drawing a lot at home. I started doing street art because I got sick of
just showing my friends and I had no idea how the gallery world worked. It is
so accessible to just go and stick something up. I guess over the last 5 years
it has merged into two practices. I still have all the street work but I also
work on commission murals and gallery shows.

How did you find the
transition from doing street art to also doing gallery work?
The hardest thing is to make the gallery not sterile. The
nice thing about the street is all the textures, and the fact that it rots,
gets painted over or someone throws up on it [laughs]. You don’t really have
that in the gallery so it is just trying to bring those textures, or that
feeling of it is not being precious into the space, is a bit of a challenge.

How would you
describe your style?
It is narrative driven, character based, folk art.
What are the narratives
based off of?
It can be anything, I keep my eyes and my ears open all the
time. If I hear someone say something it will send me off on a tangent to
create a whole story. It might even be just some stupid thing from a movie, but
I just think about it for a few days and it will filter into a floating person
with bottles hanging off them. [Laughs]

The majority of these
pieces are for the show you are having in August, which one of them is your
favorite?
This week, my favorite is called, Everyone Knows Dreams Evaporate, it is kind of sarcastic. Friends
you meet when you are 14 and they are like “I just want to be in a band or play
football” or anything like that. Then you meet them when they are older and
they just don’t care at all about those past passions. It just has to do with
that idea: people losing their passion.

Have you ever been to
Canada?
No, but I really want to go! My sister-in-law is Canadian
and she is always going on about 24hour donut shops.
Tim Horton’s?
Yeah, that is it! I want to go and eat some donuts at 3 a.m.
Then see a moose. [Laughs] …those are my Canada goals.
